Why the Aussie, Loonie, and Norwegian krone move with iron ore and oil, how to measure the correlation, and how to trade the commodity-FX link.

Some currencies are effectively a leveraged bet on what a country digs up or pumps out of the ground. The Australian dollar (AUD), the Canadian dollar (CAD), and the Norwegian krone (NOK) are the three classic "commodity currencies" — units whose value is closely tied to the price of the raw materials their economies export. When iron ore rallies, the Aussie often follows. When crude oil slumps, the Loonie (a common nickname for the Canadian dollar) and the krone tend to feel it.
Understanding this link is one of the more reliable pieces of intuition a forex trader can build. It won't give you a crystal ball, but it does explain why certain pairs move the way they do, and it gives you a second data stream — commodity prices — to cross-check your currency views. This article walks through the mechanism, the main relationships, how to measure them, and how traders actually use the connection.
The core idea is straightforward. When the world buys a country's exports, buyers generally need that country's currency to pay for them. A steel mill in China buying Australian iron ore ultimately generates demand for Australian dollars. Higher commodity prices mean more export revenue flowing into the country, which supports the currency in two ways: directly, through trade flows, and indirectly, through the health of the domestic economy and the interest-rate decisions that follow.
The indirect channel matters just as much as the direct one. When commodity revenues are strong, the exporting economy tends to grow faster, tax receipts rise, and inflation can pick up. That pushes the central bank — the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), the Bank of Canada (BoC), or Norway's Norges Bank — toward higher interest rates. Higher rates attract yield-seeking capital, which adds another layer of currency demand. So a commodity boom often shows up in FX twice: once through the trade balance and again through rate expectations.
It's worth stating the obvious caveat early: these are tendencies, not laws. Commodity currencies are still driven by global risk appetite, the US dollar, and central-bank policy, and any of those can overwhelm the commodity signal on a given day.
Each of these currencies leans on a different raw material, and the strength of the link varies.

Australia is one of the world's largest iron ore exporters, and China is its dominant customer. That makes the Aussie sensitive not just to the ore price but to Chinese growth, construction activity, and stimulus policy. Traders often watch AUD/USD as a broad gauge of both commodity demand and global risk sentiment, since the Aussie tends to rise when investors are optimistic and fall when they turn defensive. Gold also plays a role, as Australia is a major producer.
Canada is a major crude oil exporter, most of it flowing to the United States. The benchmark to watch is WTI (West Texas Intermediate) crude. Because the US is both Canada's neighbour and its main energy buyer, the cleanest expression of the oil-CAD link is the USD/CAD pair. Note the direction: when oil rises, CAD usually strengthens, which means USD/CAD tends to fall (it takes fewer Canadian dollars to buy one US dollar). Beginners often get tripped up by this inverse quoting.
Norway is a large oil and gas exporter, and energy is a big share of its economy, so the krone is closely tied to Brent crude (the European oil benchmark). The NOK is a smaller, less-traded currency than AUD or CAD, which means it can move sharply and see wider spreads. Traders often view it against the euro (EUR/NOK) because much of Norway's trade is with Europe.
The standard tool for putting a number on these relationships is correlation — a statistic ranging from +1 to -1 that measures how consistently two things move together. A reading near +1 means they move in the same direction almost every time; near -1 means they reliably move in opposite directions; near 0 means little consistent relationship.
For example, over a strong trending period, AUD/USD and iron ore might show a high positive correlation, while USD/CAD and WTI crude often show a strong negative correlation (oil up, USD/CAD down). The key thing to remember is that correlation is not fixed. It strengthens and weakens over time, and it can break entirely when another force — a surprise rate decision, a risk-off panic, a sharp move in the US dollar — takes over the driver's seat.

Knowing the relationship is one thing; using it responsibly is another. Here are the main ways traders put it to work.
The most common sensible use is confirmation. If you already have a bearish view on CAD and you notice oil rolling over, that adds weight to the trade. If your view and the commodity disagree, that's a reason to be cautious rather than to force the position.
Because the rate channel is so important, it pays to pair the commodity view with what central banks are doing. If iron ore is rising but the RBA is signalling rate cuts while the Fed holds firm, the Aussie may struggle despite the commodity tailwind. Bond-yield spreads — the gap between, say, Australian and US government bond yields — are a useful gauge of that rate story. Positioning data such as the weekly COT (Commitment of Traders) report, which shows how large speculators are positioned in futures, can flag when a move is already crowded.
The flip side of these relationships is hidden risk. Going long AUD/USD and long a CAD position may feel like two trades, but if both are really bets on the same global risk-and-commodity theme, you may be doubling your exposure to a single driver. Being aware of the shared commodity DNA helps you avoid stacking correlated positions unintentionally.
Commodity currencies react to a specific set of events: central-bank meetings, inflation and employment data from the exporting country, Chinese economic releases (for AUD), and weekly oil-inventory reports (for CAD and NOK). Tracking these on an economic calendar helps you anticipate when the commodity link might be overridden by a domestic data surprise.
